Elephant

56" x 72"
Oil on canvas

The story:
This image is about 6 feet across, and is meant to look very large in real life. The skeleton is an anatomically correct African elephant skeleton. The baby at its feet makes a futile attempt at finding shelter and comfort under the bare bones of the mother, whose tusks are missing. The hyenas in the background are busy devouring a kill. One looks up. They might or might not find the baby of interest next.

The underlying meaning:
We look through the legs of the mother's skeleton, to the background savannah and sky. She is meant to look massive in the frame, of supreme importance. She was probably killed for the ivory tusks. Her skull has a strangely human expression, as actual elephant skulls do. She is pretty much frozen in place or like a ghost, not really there. She's unable to protect her young and must watch in mute silence as the baby fends for itself.
